I am spraying my car and i am using a new compressor ..and the paint is coming out too dry ..why ?

I am spraying painting my car and ai am using a new compressor ..the paint is coming out too dry ..i have reduced the amount of thinners ..and still have the same problem .and i am a bit bamboozled ..what am i doing wrong ??

First, you need to use a good quality paint gun with the proper fluid tip and air cap recommended by the manufacturer of the paint that you are using. Make sure the paint gun is clean and working properly. The adjustment of the fan pattern and the fluid needle will also affect the how the paint goes on.

Second, don’t reduce the amount of thinner in the paint. Using less than what is recommended by the paint manufacturer will cause the paint to be too thick and come out too dry. Reduce the paint to the ratio that is listed on paint can.

Most automotive paints suggest using either a 1.3mm or 1.4 mm fluid tip and corresponding air cap.
The fan pattern should be about 10″ wide when held 6″ from the surface you are spraying, check it on a piece of masking paper taped to the wall .
A good place to start with the fluid tip is 3 1/2 turns out, you can fine tune the adjustment to suit your needs from there.
Use constant, even motion when spraying.
Hold the paint gun 6″ from the surface and overlap each pass 50% or a little more.
Watch the surface as you spray and adjust you speed accordingly, slow down if too dry and speed up if too wet.
These are general techniques for any paint, basecoat/clearcoat or single stage.
